Windows 7 Beta Update.

February 26, 2009

Windows seems to still be running smooth.  I was getting a graphics error that was causing my screen to flash on occasion with an error message.  There was a Windows update the other day that seems to have resolved that.

Trillian Version 3 doesn’t play too nice with the OS, though.  It was extremely laggy when opening or closing an IM box.  I’ve switched to Pidgin for now.  Daemon Tools also is not working with this build as of yet.  I imagine there won’t be an update for the software until Windows 7 is released on the market.  I’m not sure of any other emulators that work as well or if they’d even work at this point.  It is rather frustrating having to burn ISO files to a disc.

iTunes is a mess like usual.  It may be an issue with my memory and not the OS or iTunes itself.  If I shuffle music with cover flow on, I’ll eventually get a BSOD (~3-4 hours of continuous playback).

There’s also an issue with the X-Fi (big surprise).  5.1 audio functions correctly when viewing a DVD or movie with 5.1 sound.  The drawback is that regular MP3s are no longer simulated through all 6 speakers.  With XP & Vista, it wasn’t true 5.1 of course, but the simulated 5.1 seemed more satisfying than the straight 2.1 it uses now.

Other than a few graphical improvements and some things with Windows Explorer, there isn’t a TON different from Vista.  Windows 7 is much more snappy, though.  Shut down is almost instant and boot-up is about as fast as it’s going to get with my set-up.  I’ve also grown accustomed to my task bar on top now.  I may just leave it like that.

I really thought I’d have rolled back to Vista 64-bit by now, I’m really shocked that I have almost less issues with this beta than I did with Vista when I first installed it.

I just recently purchased a Sony S550 Blu-Ray player and have been really enjoying it.  I’d been putting off buying a single movie I really wanted for so long because I didn’t want to get a DVD version if I was getting a BR player.  The movies I’ve already purchased and viewed are:
